Congo African Grey

Congo African Grey Appearance

The African Grey Parrot species is made of two subgroups, the Congo African Grey (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) and the Timneh African Grey (Psittacus erithacus timneh). You will be able to easily tell the difference between the Timneh African Grey and the Congo once you know what to look for. The Congo is slightly larger than the Timneh and the Timneh tail feathers are more maroon. The tail feathers of the Congo are very red in color and the feather color overall is a lighter grey than the Timneh (especially on their back side). The beak of the Congo is only grey where as the Timneh have two different colors on their beaks; the lower mandible is grey and the upper mandible is bone colored with a dark edge.

Congo African Grey Temperament

A lot of people discuss the differences in the temperament of Congo’s and Timneh’s. There is a school of thought that Congo is are a little more excitable than the Timneh and that the Congo is more prone neurotic behavior, such as feather picking or biting. Some people in the field say that there is no difference between the two. The debate remains open, but there are definitely differences between individuals birds due to up bringing and genetics.

Congo African Grey Intelligence

The Congo’s are super intelligent. Alex is the most famous African Grey parrot. Dr. Irene Pepperberg has been studying Alex for years. The unique thing about Alex is that he is able to process information presented to him and then respond in the right context. He is also able to understand concepts such as shape and color, meaning that he is thinking and responding instead of just displaying behaviors he learned previously.

Congo African Grey Talking

Congo parrots are great at mimicking speech. The vast majority of Congo parrots are able to learn how to speak, but not all. If they are capable of speech they can have up to 2000 words in their vocabulary. Congo African grey parrots are also able to mimic sounds that they hear often; for example, a door bell or a telephone ring. They can mimic the sounds so well that they sometimes fool their owners!

Studying parrots like Alex has shown us that these parrots are able to speak and mimic sounds in the right context, rather than just repeat them randomly. That requires a lot of information processing and intelligence on their part.
